I recently heard friend Alfons Cornella say that for the next generation "objects" will be very important, objects that must be useful and exciting. I totally agree with this prediction and I think in this respect no one works better than Apple. But, it’s not only that the iPad presented by Steve Jobs in San Francisco is going to be a useful and exciting object, but it will change the habits of many people. On its way is a new way of reading, a new way of brousing, a new way of playing, and in many ways, a new way of working. A lot of mobility and new ways of consuming leisure and culture are also on their way. And ultimately, on their way are millions of iPads (people around here are saying that about 7 million iPads will be sold in the first year, we'll see...) and millions of people doing things in a different way than they did before.
As for the gadget itself, it surprises me greatly that the screen is not a widescreen (or at least the 3:2 of the iPhone) and I do not understand why it does not have a webcam (they’re probably leaving it for the next version). But there are two things in the iPad that I think are extraordinary:
1- Death to the Mechanical. Excellent usability through the use of fingers. In the entire history of personal computing, everything had evolved except the mechanical keyboard and mouse as a data entry system. Finally, here is a computer with a sound alternative to those two cursed peripherals. I hope and trust that this first solid step taken by Apple, serves to develop other data entry systems such as voice, biometrics or other natural interfaces. The word "typing" should sound very outdated at this stage of civilization.
2- Life to Creativity. The best thing that was done with the iPhone was to launch an SDK so that everyone could develop applications with their own ideas and also turn them into business. In the first 18 months of the iPhone, 140,000 apps have already been developed, with 3 billion downloads that have generated billions of dollars to this enormous community of developers. Has anyone calculated the employment that has been generated by this? I'm sure the new SDK that has already been released for the iPad will not only generate a lot of employment, but with this accumulated creativity, we will see really amazing applications.
And along this line, in Innovalley, we have already locked ourselves in the garage to develop solar bags and apps for this new revolution in pad form. There is nothing more exciting than taking advantage of a technology wave like this to start really surfing.
I'm sure that we will soon see iPads everywhere, in the subway, in the park, at the beach, on the couch, in bed... in your hands. I'm glad that with the iPad, the Internet and all new forms of entertainment and related communication, will come into the hands of many more people and in a much more manageable way. The whole world in your hands, wherever and whenever you want.

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con este vaticinio y creo que en esta dirección nadie trabaja mejor que Apple. Pero es que el iPad que ha presentado Steve Jobs en San Francisco no sólo será un objeto útil y emocionante sino que cambiará los hábitos de muchas personas. Se viene una nueva forma de leer, una nueva forma de navegar, una nueva formar de jugar y en gran parte una nueva forma de trabajar. Se viene mucha mobilidad y nuevas maneras de consumir ocio y cultura. Y en definitiva se vienen millones de iPads (por aquí dicen que se venderán unos 7 millones de iPads en el primer año, ya veremos...) y millones de personas haciendo las cosas de una manera diferente de como las hacían hasta ahora.
En cuanto al cacharro en si, me sorprende muchísimo que la pantalla no sea panorámica (o por lo menos el 3:2 de iPhone) y no entiendo porque no lleva webcam (seguramente la dejan para la siguiente versión). Pero hay dos cosas en el iPad que me parecen extraordinarias:
1- Muerte a la mecánica. Excelente usabilidad a través de los dedos. En toda la historia de la informática personal todo había evolucionado menos el teclado mecánico y el ratón como sistema de entrada de datos. Por fin aparece un ordenador con una alternativa sólida a estos dos malditos periféricos. Espero y confío que este primer paso en firme que da Apple sirva para evolucionar otros sistemas de entrada de datos como la voz, la biomètrica o otros interfaces naturales. La palabra “mecanografía” debería sonar ya muy rancia a estas alturas de la civilización.
2- Vida a la creatividad. Lo mejor que se hizo con el iPhone es lanzar un SDK para que todo el mundo pudiera desarrollar aplicaciones con sus propias ideas y además convertirlas en negocio. En los primeros 18 meses del iPhone ya se han desarrollado 140.000 de apps con 3 billones de descargas que han generando miles de millones de dolares para toda esta enorme comunidad de desarrolladores ¿Alguien ha calculado la de empleo que se ha generado con esto?. Estoy seguro que el nuevo SDK que ya se ha lanzado para el iPad no sólo va a generar muchos lugares de trabajo sino con esta agregación de creatividad se verán aplicaciones realmente alucinantes.
Y en esta linea, en Innovalley ya nos hemos encerrado en el garaje para desarrollar solar bags y apps para este nueva revolución en forma de tabla. Nada más apasionante que aprovechar una ola tecnológica como esta para empezar a surfear de verdad.
Estoy seguro que pronto veremos iPads por todos lados, en el metro, en el parque, en la playa, en el sofà, en la cama... en tus manos. Y me alegro que con el iPad, Internet y todas las nuevas formas de ocio y comunicación asociadas, lleguen a las manos de mucha más gente y de una manera mucho más manejable. El mundo entero en tus manos, donde quieras y cuando quieras.
